For as long as humans have been building, we have been building buildings and residential structures that appear to be straight out of fairy tales. In the modern world, we have access to different materials and things that further our creative thinking- this results in some pretty amazing buildings like the ones listed below.
Stone House, Portugal
In Portugal, there is a stone house that resembles that of the Flintstones. The house is built to be sandwiched between two large rocks. From the outside, it appears to be part of the rocks that it is built between and from certain angles, the house isn’t even visible. It was attacked by vandals in previous years and has since been fitted with bullet resistant windows and a steel front door.
Crooked House, Poland
Poland is home to the Crooked House. It was built in 2003 with inspiration from Jan Marcin Szancer and Per Dahlberg pictures. It is designed to appear crooked, but is also somehow symmetrical, meaning that the house is far from ugly but is certainly strange looking.
Habitat 67, Canada
In Quebec, Canada there is a residential building that is known as Habitat 67. The apartment building is made entirely of large cement cubes that have been placed haphazardly on top of each other, giving the building the appearance that it is about to fall over. The complex hosts 158 cement apartment units.
Cubic Houses, Netherlands
The Cubic Houses can be found in the Netherlands. Like Habitat 67, they are cube shaped houses, but unlike the other apartments, they are situated at different angles over hexagon pylons. When looked at from afar, they resemble trees!
The Piano House, China
The Piano House in China is a sight for sore eyes. The body of the building is designed to look like a grand piano and visitors enter the building through the violin shaped entrance. The building spacious and offers meeting rooms and escalators.
Kansas City Public Library, United States
The Kansas City Public Library is a dream location for book lovers. Not only does the library hold thousands of books, but it also looks like books. The exterior of the library is designed to resemble classic novels from authors like J.R.R Tolkien, E.B White, Shakespeare, and Charles Dickens.
As we develop new building materials and come up with ways to use them, our building designs will continue to get more and more creative. It’s fun to think of what might be built next.
